Constructed with a durable steel casing, the Broan 6201 Big Heat Portable Heater is suitable for use in garages, workshops, and basements. It is called Big Heat because it delivers enough warmth to keep medium size rooms comfortable and toasty in spite of its small package.
The casing is colored silver gray which is a nice match to the dark gray grille, handle, dials, and rounded bumpers on its edges. The grille, because it is in the path of heated air coming out of the heater, is coated with baked enamel that is resistant to heat. The bumpers are incorporated to protect surfaces accidentally knocked when carrying the heater.
The coating of the heater is sufficiently strong to protect the steel from rust and corrosion, making it suitable for bathroom use. However, over the long term, surface rust can develop.
Relying on ceramic heating elements, the Broan Big Heat generates up 5,120 BTUs when adjusted to a high setting of 1,500 watts. You can use this setting for a quick warm up of a cold room. When heating an average-sized bathroom, this setting can raise temperatures by as much as 15° in 10 to 15 minutes.
A low setting of 1,200 watts is also available, which you can use when the room is sufficiently warm and you are only trying to maintain a comfortably warm level. This helps keep your heating costs down. A built-in thermostat also helps fine tune temperature levels.
A fan with high and low settings also helps bring in heated air into the room. High moves the air more quickly, but it is noisier than the low setting. A third fan only setting is also available for use in cooling the room in summer.
For safety, the Broan 6201 Big Heat Portable Heater is equipped with a tip-over switch and overheating protection. These automatically shut the heater if it is toppled or if the temperature of its heating elements becomes excessively high.
